What to Look At Beyond Price When Choosing a Manufacturer

A low price can matter when choosing a manufacturer, but it does not explain the purchasing decision on its own. How well the product fits your requirement, the production capacity, and how the order will be managed all need to be assessed together. Written by GENCO · 11 October 2026 · Sector Note

Product experience

Find out what the manufacturer has produced in your product group. Ask for information about products close to the features you require, rather than reviewing a general catalogue.

Capacity and lead time

Clarify what the offered lead time depends on. Raw material supply, the production plan, sample approval and packaging preparation can all affect the date.

Technical information and documents

Check how the technical data and documents you need relate to the product. The presence of a document does not show that it is sufficient for every product or every intended use. Have the necessary assessment carried out by people competent for the nature of the product.

The sample process

Establish what the sample represents: a series-production item, or a specially prepared example? How will the features accepted on the sample be carried into the order?

Commercial terms

Alongside price, compare the payment plan, the scope of delivery, packaging, the validity period of the quotation and the conditions for changes.

Communication and follow-up

How clearly and quickly technical questions are answered tells you how working with the manufacturer will go. Do not leave unclear answers until after the order.
